Delia Miller, a prominent artist from Apopka, has been making significant strides in the art scene of Central Florida. Known for her mesmerizing murals that are deeply rooted in nature and cultural heritage, Miller has a unique approach to her craft. She believes in creating art that is not just visually appealing but also narratively rich, telling stories through her work.
Growing Up in the APK
Miller’s journey in the art world began in her elementary school years in Apopka and gained momentum during her senior year at Apopka High. “Growing up in Apopka was really nice. There’s definitely a lot of history there and so much amazing wildlife and foliage to draw inspiration from and being able to grow up around that and really learn about our ecosystem and the history of Apopka,” said Miller.
Her passion for art was further ignited when she joined an after-school art club, which aimed to create a mural for the city. Despite the project not coming to fruition, Miller’s determination led her to take initiative and pursue her artistic endeavors independently.
Art Within Reach
Her work with ArtReach Orlando is particularly notable. As an instructor, she empowers youth, helping them find their strength and voice through art. Miller’s dedication to teaching reflects her belief in the transformative power of art, especially for the younger generation. Miller’s passion was evident as she spoke about ArtReach and the children she works with. “I really, really enjoy teaching and sharing my art with kids and using art as a tool I feel is so important. It’s a way for the kids to express themselves and have fun.” She encourages our readers to visit her murals, “stop by the mural at ArtReach Orlando, which is also shared space with McCray Art Studios. It is such a vibrant and really fun mural that I got to do with a team of two other female artists. And what I really loved about that project is that we collaborated with the students at ArtReach, and I just feel that their mission is so important to me as a nonprofit that provides art as a tool for healing and also an educational tool for kids.”
In a personal message to young Black artists, Miller emphasizes the importance of self-expression and perseverance. She encourages them to start creating, develop a portfolio, and boldly pitch their ideas. Her advice is a beacon of inspiration, urging them to embrace their unique experiences and artistic visions. “My message to other young Black artists is to start creating,” Miller said. “Expressing your unique experiences and what makes up who you are through whatever medium you choose is unlike anything else. Begin developing a portfolio and do not be afraid to pitch your ideas to clients and to reach out to other local artists that inspire you.”

Beyond her artistic pursuits, Miller is also a student pilot, working towards her private pilot license and aiming for a career as a commercial pilot. Miller said she is “training at a flight school at Orlando executive airport, working on my private pilot’s license. My goal initially was the airlines, but every day, especially at the airport, I’m learning about all the different career paths for pilots, like flying privately for an owner or flying cargo.” But aviation wasn’t always on her career path; “I was studying engineering at UCF and I didn’t really love it. And I also was learning a little bit more about the world of aviation. I was attending a wedding with my family and at the Pittsburgh airport, I saw a young black female pilot, and I went up and talked to her and [this was in the bathroom too].
And I went and talked to her and she told me how she got into the field and she’s also from Orlando she attended Embry Riddle.” Miller noted the pilot shared that just “5% of all pilots are black and less than 1% are black females. 10 live in Central Florida.” The pilot emailed Miller with a list of non-profits that help with aviation exposure for young Black students, and she connected with them. “And that’s when I took my first flight lesson and that was almost two years ago.”
Delia Miller’s story is a testament to the power of passion and the impact of art in community engagement and personal growth. Her journey from a young artist in Apopka to a muralist and teacher, coupled with her aspirations in aviation, paints a picture of a multifaceted individual shaping her path and inspiring others along the way.
