Jerry Demings has made significant contributions to Orlando, particularly impacting the Black community through his role as Orange County Mayor. Demings’ tenure, especially since October 2022, has been marked by a blend of leadership, innovation and community-focused initiatives that have shaped the landscape of Orange County in various ways.
Leadership and Governance
As Orange County Mayor, Demings serves as the CEO of the county government and the Chair of the Board of County Commissioners (BCC). His leadership extends to numerous boards and committees, including the Central Florida Expressway Authority, the Central Florida Transit Authority (LYNX) and the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority. His role in these positions allows him to influence key decisions affecting transportation, infrastructure and regional governance, which are crucial for the growth and development of the Black community in Orlando.
Transportation and Infrastructure
Demings has been a champion for expanding the local commuter system, as seen in his leadership of the Central Florida Commuter Rail Commission (SUNRAIL) and his efforts in the Transportation Infrastructure Sales Tax Ballot Initiative in 2022. Although the initiative did not pass, it reflects his commitment to improving transportation infrastructure, a critical aspect for the economic mobility and daily life of many Central Florida residents.
Mental Health and Public Safety
In 2023, Demings’ appointment to the National Association of Counties Mental Health Commission and his role as NACo’s Justice and Public Safety Policy Committee Chair underscore his dedication to addressing mental health, homelessness and public safety. His leadership in local efforts to reduce gaps in services for those suffering from mental, behavioral and substance disorders, including a significant financial allocation by Orange County, directly benefits vulnerable segments of the Black community.
Citizen Engagement and Public Safety
The establishment of the Orange County Tourist Development Tax Task Force and the reconstitution of the Orange County Citizens Safety Task Force under Demings’ commission demonstrates his commitment to citizen engagement and public safety. These task forces allow for direct citizen input and focus on reducing violent crime and gun violence, issues that disproportionately affect the Black community.
Housing and Development
Demings’ efforts in increasing affordable housing through the Housing Trust Fund Initiative are noteworthy. The construction of hundreds of affordable residential units directly addresses the housing needs of the Black community, improving living conditions and opportunities for homeownership.

Demings’ impact and leadership have been recognized through various awards, including the “Mayor of the Year in Americas 2023” by the United States Minority Chamber of Commerce and the National Association of Black Law Enforcement Executives 2023 Presidential Award. Looking ahead, Demings aims to execute Orange County’s $6.7 billion budget to address key areas like affordable housing, public safety, and environmental concerns. The challenges of a growing population, traffic congestion, and environmental sustainability are on his agenda, with plans like the “Green Place Initiative” and the Vision 2050 Plan, which are set to shape the future of Orlando.
Jerry Demings’ tenure as Orange County Mayor has been instrumental in driving positive change and addressing critical issues affecting the Black community in Orlando.
