In the dynamic cityscape of Orlando, the appointment of Eric D. Smith as the 40th police chief marked a significant chapter in the city’s law enforcement history. Smith’s journey with the Orlando Police Department (OPD) began in 1994, a year following his graduation from the University of Central Florida with a degree in criminal justice. His ascension to this role under the appointment of Mayor Buddy Dyer in the fall of 2022 was not just a career milestone; it was a beacon of hope and change for the community, particularly the Black community in Orlando.

Early Influences and Community Engagement

Smith’s early years on the force, especially his time in Parramore, a predominantly African American neighborhood west of downtown Orlando, laid the foundation for his community-focused approach. Here, he went beyond the call of duty, running a Boy Scout troop as a means of guiding at-risk youth. This early initiative was a clear indication of his commitment to community policing and youth engagement, fostering a bond of trust and understanding between the police force and the residents.

A Strategic Approach to Crime Reduction

As Chief, Smith’s strategy to combat violent crime has been multifaceted. A notable increase in officer deployment has been a key factor in this strategy. The results speak volumes about the effectiveness of his approach: a 30 percent reduction in shootings since 2022, a 10 percent decrease in violent crime, a 36 percent increase in gun seizures related to crimes, and an impressive 84 percent homicide clearance rate. These statistics not only demonstrate his efficacy in crime reduction but also highlight his commitment to making Orlando a safer place for all its residents.

Legislative Measures and Community Safety

Chief Smith’s focus isn’t limited to on-the-ground policing; he also understands the importance of legislative measures in maintaining public safety. Smith supported the new law passed by the Orlando City Council, which imposed a six-month moratorium on new downtown nightclubs and stipulated stricter regulations for bars. By tackling issues associated with nightlife in the city, Smith is addressing safety concerns that directly impact the quality of life for Orlando’s residents.

Impact On The Community

For the African American community in Orlando, Chief Smith’s efforts represent a significant shift in the relationship between the police and the community. His early work in Parramore and his continued commitment to community policing have been pivotal in building trust and fostering a sense of security. His initiatives not only address immediate safety concerns but also aim to nurture a generation of youth through positive engagement and mentorship.

Progressive Policing

Chief Eric D. Smith’s impact on Orlando, particularly our Black community, is profound. His holistic approach to law enforcement, which combines strategic policing with community engagement and legislative support, is a blueprint for progressive policing. Smith’s leadership is not just about reducing crime statistics; it’s about building a more cohesive, trusting, and safe community. His tenure as the chief of police in Orlando is a shining example of how dedicated leadership can bring about tangible, positive change in a community.
