'Orlando' Magazine Wins 8 Awards for Excellence

Recognition from Florida Magazine Association includes honors for design, writing, photography.

Orlando magazine has won eight awards from the Florida Magazine Association in the group’s annual Charlie Awards competition.

The honors included two-first place Charlie Awards for Best Feature Design and Best Typography for a feature on “burgermania’’ in Orlando. The magazine also  received two silver awards for writing—a feature by Gary McKechnie and Nancy Howell on Orlando’s role in the case of the Groveland Four, a group of African American men wrongly accused of raping a white woman in 1949; and a series of columns by Editor Barry Glenn, including “A Murder in Georgia,’’ about a racist killing in the town where he grew up.

Recognizing achievements by Florida magazines since 1957, FMA's annual Charlie Awards competition honors publishers, writers, editors, artists, photographers, printers, marketers and others as the best among their peers in scores of categories. Juried by recognized out-of-state magazine and newspaper professionals, and college journalism professors, hundreds of entries vie for first, second and third place awards—Charlie, Silver and Bronze.

The awards were presented Friday night at the FMA’s annual Charlie Awards banquet, held at the Walt Disney World Swan Hotel.
