Candle lit Halloween pumpkins

October, a time when some parts of the country experience a change in seasons, the ushering of fall leaves and cooler temperatures, the unpacking of sweaters and blankets, and pumpkins and ghostly decorations begin to make an appearance. In Orlando, we trade the fall leaves for slightly less-hot days, the chance of hurricanes, and shorts and a t-shirt. I spent every childhood Halloween in Central Florida, all but one being outside, and always in a much fancier neighborhood than we lived in. It’s hard to remember a Halloween night in Central Florida that wasn’t either sweltering or torrentially downpouring. Our costumes, which we so-happily selected from the local department store or big box chain, were always made of the least breathable material (hello polyester). As the evening progressed, accessories were discarded and painted-faces were melted. You could always tell how long someone had been trick-or-treating by the disheveled state of their costume.

This year, we invite you to recapture some of that Halloween fun with two fantastic stories. Jennifer McKee promises to send shivers down your spine as she tours the most haunted hotel rooms across the nation. For something closer to home, a visit to local haunted houses, ranging from the ever-terrifying Mortem Manor to the less gruesome Face the Fear, ensures both thrills and support for local businesses. A real treat, no tricks involved.

Transitioning from the spectral to the influential, this month we spotlight Orlando magazine’s 2023 50 Most Powerful People. A list that celebrates individuals who, through their decisions, influence Orlando’s socio-economic tapestry spanning education, politics, arts, and much more. These pivotal figures are the architects of Orlando’s vibrant landscape, cementing its status as a prime destination to live.

Our travel enthusiasts are in for a treat as writer Lisa Beach navigates the scenic terrains and cultural landscapes of Colorado starting on page 22. If the culinary world beckons, Brendan O’Connor’s insights on Orlando’s thriving restaurant scene await you on page 96. And as the month winds down, a tantalizing staycation giveaway at Gaylord Palms is yours to enter, perfect for the forthcoming festive season. Dive into the details at orlandomagazine.com/gaylordgiveaway (no purchase necessary).

Wishing you an October filled with enchantment and eerie delights. Happy haunting!
