Founded in 2017, Maitland-based ThreatLocker is a cybersecurity company that has thrived during a time when it seems every computer system—starting with the one on your desk—is at risk of some sort of unpleasant malware attack. Business, in fact, has been so good that ThreatLocker intends to hire 200 more people this year, augmenting a staff of about 350.
One reason for ThreatLocker’s success is the failure of a competitor’s cybersecurity program in July 2021. More than 1,000 companies experienced widespread downtime after a ransomware attack by the REvil gang, which has since vanished from the internet.
Companies using ThreatLocker programs were spared and stayed online. That helped created a boon in sales that continues to this day, says Heather Hartland, ThreatLocker’s vice president of experiential marketing.
ThreatLocker sells a program that, once installed, helps ward off “malware, spyware, ransomware and other nasty things.” The key to the program is that it “whitelists” approved and appropriate programs, while preventing unknown intruders from running wild.
Like many in the tech world, ThreatLocker is working to diversify its workforce and is particularly interested in sparking interest in young women into become programmers or coding experts.
ThreatLocker promotes Tech Sassy Girlz, a local non-profit focused on educating middle and high school girls about STEM fields.
“We have been able to have success because we have been investing in our people and a variety of people,” Hartland says.
ThreatLocker recently announced a partnership with the Orlando Magic and is providing cybersecurity for the NBA team.
It gives back to the community through its own swag shop, with proceeds going to the Ronald McDonald House Charities.
