Special Memories and Cherished Traditions
It's December, Orlando!
December often comes and goes so quickly, but it wasn’t always this way. As a child, holidays often took forever to arrive, and were met with such excitement and wonder. Countdown calendars to momentous events were a regular occurrence, even if those “big” occasions were only grand in the eyes of a child. So why does time seem to move differently now that we’re older? A recent Harvard University study suggests as we age, our ability to process visual information slows; we perceive fewer mental images, and time feels like it’s speeding up. Some experts say the amount of time we’ve lived also factors into this perception of time moving faster as we get older. This year, I encourage everyone, myself included, to slow down, make a memory and find joy in the simple things this holiday season.
Let’s begin with a joyful story about a musician whose life shifted focus when his youngest was born with Down syndrome beginning on page 14. Then, our resident elves searched high and low for Santa breakfasts across Central Florida and rounded up some of the best for you to attend on page 156. Want to get into the holiday spirit and experience a festive atmosphere? Head to page 32 and browse ten amazing over-the-top holiday dining experiences Orlando has to offer, from Christmas-themed bars to life-size gingerbread houses.
For those who still need to finish their shopping, we’ve scoured some of Orlando’s favorite local stores like Freehand Goods, Wondermade and Good Crowd and selected 10 fun gifts under $25. From Florida-themed ornaments to Pub sub inspired keychains, this gift guide is perfect for any Orlando resident in your life (or for those who simply love The City Beautiful). Rather skip traditional gifts for a pampering experience instead? Megan Padilla rounds up the best spas for groups, couples, moms and more on page 28.
Our December edition also offers the most comprehensive Doctors Issue in Central Florida, with more than 800 physicians named by their peers in dozens of categories starting on page 43. Plus, we sit down with 11 amazing local doctors as they share their most memorable moments, from pediatric success stories to a young multiple sclerosis patient’s journey to regain her mobility.
Finally, take time to be kind this month, not just to others, but to yourself as well. December isn’t jolly for everyone, and many find this time of year difficult and mentally and financially taxing. We encourage you to 1) engage in self-care and prioritize yourself, 2) stick to a routine, 3) turn down invitations, 4) set a budget (or skip the gifts and just be present), and 5) know the feeling will pass. We’re here to help you, whether you need a good read or want to engage with us online, your Orlando magazine family appreciates you, your readership, and all you do for our community.
From our family to yours,
