Escape the Ordinary in Jackson County, North Carolina
Discover Jackson for yourself.
As spring arrives in the mountains and vibrant colors bloom, there’s no better place to escape to than Jackson County, NC. The charming mountain towns offer the perfect reprieve from Orlando’s heat and crowds, plus local dishes we can’t find anywhere else, a variety of hikes that pay off with stunning sunsets, and much more.
We Find Natural Adventure
On the way into Jackson County, we feel immersed in the natural beauty of the mountains right away. Making a stop on the Blue Ridge Parkway (a little out of the way, but worth it) for Waterrock Knob Trail sets the tone. Even the parking lot has expansive views of the Plott Balsam Mountains all the way to the Smokies. But the real reward is the 360-degree views at the end of the short but steep trail. This peak is one of the 20 highest peaks in the Eastern US, and while always spectacular, it’s particularly awe-inspiring at sunrise and sunset.
Another trail at the top of our list is the Tuckasegee River Greenway. This one-mile hike crosses a footbridge and winds through scenic landscapes. Depending on our mood, we run, walk, or bike this trail. And with a gentle grade and a lot of shade, we can count on this two-mile loop any time of the day.
We Savor Every Flavor
After all that exploring, refueling is key. Our favorite place, Dalaya Thai Cuisine, is situated along the riverbank and has intimate outdoor seating. But the rustic atmosphere isn’t the main draw for us. Chef Kanlaya “Gun” Supachana was nominated for best chef in the Southeast by the James Beard Foundation. Her “Curry in a Hurry” and other signature dishes like Khao Muu Daeng (marinated pork loin) represent her heritage with a delicious local twist.
Our culinary adventures don’t stop after dinner. Santé – The Wine Bar in downtown Sylva is a great stop for a night cap. Hosting a variety of events, tastings with special guests, and live music, there’s always something to look forward to at Santé.
We Feel at Ease
A vacation wouldn’t be complete without a little self-care, and a spa day feels right to us. There are several great spas in Jackson County, each reflecting the unique vibe of its town. Cashiers Spa combines the beauty of the mountains with rejuvenating techniques ranging from Swedish Massage to Thai Herbal Poultice. And at Carole Lilly Massage in Sylva, we get to choose the essential oils for our treatments, get pampered with heated herbal towels, and enjoy an after-session treat and take-home gift.
Jackson County during spring is a treat for the senses. With a perfect blend of natural beauty and outdoor activities, unique culinary finds, and relaxing moments, Jackson County can’t help but show off this time of year.
