'Tis the season for giving.

The desire to donate to the underserved swells during the holidays and dovetails nicely with end-of-year tax considerations. If there’s one thing we know about Central Floridians, they are generous with their time, talent, and money.

With that in mind, Orlando magazine is offering this guide to local charities and a few national organizations that have a strong local presence. This list is not exhaustive, but a starting point for those who wish to contribute to the well-being of others.

It’s good to be generous, but even better to be aware of how your gift will be used. To help filter out the scammers, consider checking your choices with an independent evaluator such as Charity Navigator (charitynavigator.org) and Charity Watch (charitywatch.org).

Charles Schwab Corp. has published a useful report, called The Schwab Charitable Giving Guide, based on research produced by the Stanford Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society.

The guide explores every aspect of responsible giving—including identifying goals, establishing a giving structure and creating and implementing a plan—and may be accessed at schwabcharitable.org.

The past two years have been difficult for so many, and we hope this list encourages our readers to reach out to help their neighbors. Please go to orlandomagazine.com for a more comprehensive list of charities.
