You might think of Full Sail University as a maternity ward where innovative ideas are born. On its sprawling campus, its 21,000 students and 2,600-plus staff members create, study, develop and unleash technology whose impact is felt worldwide.

“At Full Sail, we’re proud to be a part of Orlando’s emerging technologies landscape both in educating next-gen talent and serving as a talent pipeline to the region and beyond,” says Dr. Haifa Maamar, the school’s executive director of emerging technologies.

Those technologies include artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, information technology, simulation and visualization, software engineering, interactive technologies, user experience and nationally ranked gaming programs.

The 210-acre-plus Winter Park campus contains more than 110 studios and labs infused with tech from relevant industries. It’s also home to Full Sail University Orlando Health Fortress, the largest U.S. esports venue, with a 10 million-pixel LED wall and a concert-level sound system.

The school’s Institute of Emerging Technology “provides real world education that guides our students to create innovative technology solutions, partnerships to further the development of a responsible and ethical approach to tech and building groundbreaking projects designed around solving everyday problems utilizing technology,” she says.

In 2022, Full Sail partnered with AdventHealth University (AHU) to open a Healthcare Technology Lab.

“The healthcare tech lab is designed to give the teams at Full Sail and AHU a space to develop innovative solutions to enhance patient safety, training for nurses and other medical professionals, and collaborate on joint healthcare research projects,” Maamar says. The lab has already received awards for innovations.

The same year, the school launched a fitness lab in partnership with Echelon Fit that Maamar says “allows our students to participate in innovation centered on enhancing Echelon equipment and features.” This will result in the “development and implementation of new features for different product lines and fitness and health solutions.”

It also opened a virtual production stage “where emerging tech and film students can engage with the facility and its use of Unreal game engine to create a plethora of onscreen environments and landscapes for both film and commercial use,” she adds.

The school is also “actively engaged in identifying innovative strategies for designing and developing solutions to transform Orlando into a smart city,” Maamar says.
